“God’s Perfect Idiot”: Conservative Senator Roasts His RINO Colleague Who Just Got Obliterated by MAGA

Speaking during an appearance on Fox News Channel, the always entertaining Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) explained Sunday why fellow Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy’s primary defeat over the weekend was inevitable, having a laugh as he joked about how the buffoon of a RINO had made a big mess of things by voting to impeach Trump.

For reference, as we reported on The American Tribune, “Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) is about to be a senator no more, as he lost his primary battle in a crushing primary defeat to a MAGA challenger, Julia Letlow, who had been backed by President Donald Trump. Cassidy lost the race by no small margin, getting defeated by a whopping 20 points! In fact, Letlow finished with around 44.8% of the vote and Senator Cassidy with around 24.7% of the vote, which put him in third place after John Fleming, who came in second with around 28 percent of the vote. Letlow and Fleming will now head to a run-off election over the summer, but Cassidy is out for good.”

It was in the context of that big defeat of Sen. Cassidy, the first time an incumbent Republican Senator has lost a primary election since 2012, that Sen. John Kennedy chimed in on Fox News and explained why Cassidy was destined to lose, and lose badly.

Speaking to “The Sunday Briefing” host Peter Doocy, Sen. Kennedy noted that polling has long shown the senator to be in trouble, and so this was entirely predictable. He said, “Unless you’re God’s perfect idiot, the result was predictable. I mean, ‘ground control to Major Tom,’ the polls have shown for well over a year that Senator Cassidy was in trouble.”

Kennedy then tried to praise his soon to be former colleague somewhat, saying, “I think the president’s endorsement of Congresswoman Letlow was sort of the icing on the cake. Bill knew that, but he decided to run anyway. I respect that. I thank him for his service, he was very gracious in his concession speech.”

Kennedy then said he wouldn’t chime in either way in the runoff primary, as both candidates are good, joking about what few things could get him to get involved. He said, “We now got a runoff between two fine people. For what it’s worth, I don’t plan to get involved.”

He continued, doing his usual, very entertaining routine of folksy wisdom, “A wise man once said nothing. Why? Because he’s a wise man. But I don’t plan on weighing in, and, you know, if one of them starts talking about my mama, I might, otherwise I’m just going to vote like everybody else.”

Then, returning to Sen. Cassidy getting blown out of the water and having long been in trouble, Sen. Kennedy said, “President Trump’s endorsement had a huge, huge impact — there’s no question about that — but there were other factors. And, as I said, Bill’s been in trouble politically for over a year and he knew that. And I don’t think anybody was especially surprised, especially after President Trump weighed in.”
