Sydney Sweeney returned to her hometown of Spokane, Washington, and went straight to work helping families caught in the wreckage of the region’s devastating wildfires. Video circulating online showed the actress handing free meals to people arriving by car at a local community kitchen. The relief effort came after tens of thousands of residents were forced from their homes and hundreds of structures were destroyed.
Sweeney, who grew up in the Spokane area, joined volunteers at the Women and Children’s Free Restaurant and Community Kitchen on Wednesday, August 5th. The organization was serving people affected by the Spokane Area Fires, including displaced families and others dealing with the immediate aftermath. The event gave residents a place to receive a prepared meal while emergency crews continued working across the county.
Footage showed Sweeney dressed casually in overalls and a white shirt as she moved between vehicles and handed food to residents. Rather than appearing at a staged press conference or photo op event, she was working alongside the people already involved in the local response. The video quickly spread online as viewers recognized the Hollywood star helping in the city where she was raised.
Journalist Nick Sortor shared the footage in an X post, writing that Sweeney had been spotted “handing out free meals to residents who lost EVERYTHING” in the fires. He added, “She just showed up. Good on you,” and tagged the actress. The clip showed Sweeney approaching a waiting vehicle and passing a meal to someone inside.
Spokane outlet KHQ reported that the Women and Children’s Free Restaurant had announced Sweeney’s participation before the event. The meal distribution, organized in collaboration with World Central Kitchen, began at 3 p.m. at the restaurant’s North Washington Street location. “If you need dinner, please stop by,” organizers said.
Sweeney also used her own platform to draw attention to the damage in eastern Washington and the relief groups working on the ground. “Spokane has always been home to me. It’s where I grew up, where my family still lives,” she wrote in a statement. She said members of her own family were among those affected and directed followers toward organizations assisting residents with food, supplies, and recovery essentials.
The scale of the disaster left a major need for that assistance. Reuters reported that the three fires around Spokane had burned more than 10,000 acres, destroyed over 700 structures, and forced as many as 64,000 people to evacuate. Firefighters had established primary containment lines by Wednesday, although the fires were not yet fully contained and crews remained focused on protecting structures and extinguishing hot spots.
Authorities arrested 37-year-old Aaron Farinacci in connection with the Old Trails Fire and accused him of arson. The causes of the Autumn Lane and Fairview fires remained under investigation, and officials had not attributed either blaze to lightning. Despite the widespread destruction, officials reported no deaths as crews gained ground under improving weather conditions.
