Chase reportedly died Tuesday after meningitis and blood infections led to sepsis, causing her body to shut down.

Actress Daveigh Chase, best known for portraying Samara Morgan in the horror film “The Ring” and voicing Lilo in Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch,” died on June 16 at age 35.

News of Chase’s death came days after her boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, launched a GoFundMe campaign seeking support for her medical care as she battled a series of serious health complications.

In the fundraiser, Hernandez described the actress as “a light in my life” and reflected on her struggles away from the spotlight.

“Many people know her as a talented childhood actor from ‘Lilo & Stitch,’ ‘Spirited Away,’ and ‘Donnie Darko,’” Hernandez wrote. “But behind the scenes, she’s faced more than her share of hardship.”

The fundraiser revealed that Chase had been diagnosed with meningitis and multiple serious blood infections. Hernandez said her condition had become critical and that doctors warned she “may not have much time left.”

“All she ever wanted was a place where we could live together, feel safe, and be happy,” he wrote. “Now, more than ever, I want to give her that sense of home and peace in her final days.”

At the time of publication, the campaign had raised more than $2,500 toward its $5,500 goal.

TMZ, citing Hernandez, reported that Chase died Tuesday after meningitis and blood infections led to sepsis, causing her body to shut down. The outlet also reported that she had been hospitalized earlier this month for malnutrition.
Born in Las Vegas in 1990 and raised in Albany, Oregon, Chase began acting as a child and quickly established herself as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable young performers. She appeared as Samantha Darko in the 2001 cult film “Donnie Darko,” voiced Chihiro in the English-language version of Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning animated film “Spirited Away,” and starred as the voice of Lilo in Disney’s 2002 animated hit “Lilo & Stitch.”

That same year, Chase gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Samara Morgan in “The Ring,” earning the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain. She later appeared in television series including “ER,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” and HBO’s “Big Love,” where she portrayed Rhonda Volmer. According to IMDb, her final credited acting role was in the 2016 video game “Let It Die.”

In a 2009 interview with Interview Magazine, Chase reflected on the kind of work she hoped to pursue as she matured as an actress.

“I just want to make something that I love and people will respect,” she said. “I want to do things that will change someone’s life, not something they’ll forget about tomorrow.”

In the same interview, Chase recalled how her acting career began unexpectedly after a family trip to Los Angeles led to a lengthy stay in the city, where she started auditioning for roles at a young age.
