Rising country music star Ella Langley has found herself under media scrutiny over the possibility that she might support President Donald Trump or hold conservative political beliefs. Langley, whose hit song “Choosin’ Texas” propelled her to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, has said relatively little about politics during her rapid rise. That silence has left entertainment writers searching through an old Facebook post and her upcoming concert schedule for clues about where she stands politically.
The speculation follows the enormous success of “Choosin’ Texas,” which had spent four consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 when the report was published. The song’s music video also featured a lineup that included “Yellowstone” actor Luke Grimes, Ava Phillippe, singer-songwriter Kaitlin Butts, and Miranda Lambert. Its success helped turn Langley from an emerging country performer into one of the genre’s most closely watched new stars.
Blavity described her outward appearance as a “distinctly Southern conservative aesthetic” before examining whether it reflected Langley’s actual political views. The outlet admitted that Langley has not made many public statements about politics or openly declared herself part of the MAGA movement.
As Yahoo reported, one of the main pieces of evidence cited in the speculation was a Facebook post Langley shared in 2020. The photo showed the singer wearing a shirt with a checklist containing the options “Democrat,” “Republican,” and “Country Music.” The box beside “Country Music” was checked.
Langley added a caption that appeared to be made to dodge the usual demand that entertainers and media personalities publicly declare a party affiliation. “‘Hey Ella, what is your political stance?’ Me: Casually looks down at my shirt,” she wrote. The post did not endorse Trump or the Republican Party, but it suggested Langley preferred to identify herself through her music rather than openly choose between the two parties, at least at the time. 2020 was the summer of the George Floyd riots and Covid-19.
Media attention has also focused on Langley’s scheduled appearance at Kid Rock’s Rock the Country festival. The event describes itself as “a celebration of community, tradition, and the spirit that’s carried America through 250 years.” Its promo material says that the festival is a place “where neighbors become friends, families come together under the wide-open sky, and folks from every walk of life share the simple joy of great music and good company.”
Rock the Country has not formally identified itself as a Republican or MAGA event but its lineup includes Kid Rock and Jason Aldean, two country performers who have very publicly supported President Trump. Langley’s participation alongside them was presented as another possible indicator of her views.
The festival was scheduled to begin May 1st and travel around the country with “seven massive shows” in “seven small towns.” Several planned South Carolina dates had reportedly been canceled after performers, including rapper Ludacris, withdrew from the event. Langley remained attached to the wider festival tour as the media continued examining her political sympathies.
For now, the evidence behind the MAGA label remains speculative. Langley has not come out and endorsed Trump or identified herself as a Republican. The evidence rests primarily on her willingness to perform at a festival headlined by prominent Trump supporters.
